Abraham Maslow coined the phrase “if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail” What if the tools a coach or therapist have been taught to work with, are all conscious, whilst the client’s problem is unconscious? Bang! Bang! Goes the conscious hammer but will it ever strike the unconscious nail?
As a coach, you want to be able to bring about the greatest change in your clients that directs their behaviour and enables them to realise their potential or ambitions in life. Therefore, It is important that you are able to tap into the unconscious mind in order to do this effectively.
Everyone is aware that they possess a conscious mind, the important part of using it as a coaching tool, is to facilitate a process whereby the unconscious mind starts to trust the conscious mind. The Conscious mind works in tandem with the unconscious to facilitate behaviour, while the conscious mind works on a much smaller scale than the unconscious, perhaps it is worthwhile to see them as a whole rather than two parts. Much like an iceberg, the conscious mind represents the part that we work with every day, but it is a tiny fractal of the whole person. The unconscious sits below the surface and makes up the bigger part of the mind, although we seldom realise the two parts work as one whole.
