Description

What is bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia is an eating disorder, where people with poor mental health obsess about their body shape and size. Specifically, they will binge eat vast amounts of food, in a short space of time and then proceed to vomit immediately afterwards. The purging process that follows eating can be either vomiting, taking laxatives or exercising profusely in an attempt to rid the body of the calories.

How common is bulimia?

Bulimia nervosa is prevalent in 1.5% of women and 0.5% of men in the United States, which translates to 4.7 million females and 1.5 million males. Bulimia begins around 13 years old, as the body enters puberty.

Signs and symptoms of bulimia

The most noticeable sign/symptom of bulimia is consuming vast quantities of food over a very short period of time. This is called the binge eating phase, where the mind becomes obsessed with having to eat until you are fit to burst. The next phase is the purge. This stage is where the person can feel in control, as they begin vomiting, taking laxatives or exercising like crazy.

What is the cause of bulimia in bulimic people?

Studies into adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s), have highlighted that childhood trauma and abuse can be amongst the causes of bulimia. Becoming bulimic doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a process of being unable to come to terms with one’s feelings, that gradually overwhelms. Growing up in an environment where hypocrisy reigns supremely, mental health disorders soar. Negative emotional memory images (EMI’s) caused by adverse experiences, dwell in the mind’s eye and constantly trigger the fight/flight/freeze mechanism.

Bulimia help

It’s important to realise that bulimia is a psychophysiological condition, whereby the thoughts compel the body to take action. This is a subconscious process; therefore, self-help support groups may seem the logical place to go, however, the answer to your problem is illogical. In order to genuinely address the cause of your bulimia, we must locate and clear the negative emotional memory image (EMI) that is triggering this hypnotic loop that you are trapped in.

Health risks of bulimia nervosa

A quick internet search can reveal that Bulimia may permanently damage your stomach and intestines, leading to other problems such as

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Hormonal problems
  • Reproductive issues
  • Irregular periods/missed periods
  • Fertility problems

These are all common side effects of bulimia. We believe that Bulimia is triggered via the brain’s ‘freeze’ stress response. The fight/flight/freeze response is our bodies natural defence system against predators. Flight is our first kneejerk response to get away and escape, if our exit is blocked then fight is the next consideration. If the predator is too large for us to fight, then our body moves to freeze. The freeze response can leave us feeling numb and detached from our body, which can then drive bulimia.

Bulimia treatment

Since bulimia is an illogical, irrational problem then the treatment should also be illogical and irrational, in order to affect the best results. Bulimia is a psychophysiological condition; your mind is genuinely influencing your body. To interrupt this process, we must first realise that the problem is never the problem! Growing up in a household where hypocrisy loomed large, your mind has entered into a double bind. A subconscious hypnotic loop needs to be broken, hypnosis as the name suggests may be just the tool you need.

Hypnotherapy for bulimia

Bulimia is a hypnotic trance state! Attempting to use conscious talking therapies take a long time and the cost is huge. With 25+ year’s of helping people to clear their mind of childhood hypocrisies, I recommend hypnosis and hypnotherapy for bulimia.
