Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQs )

How do I know if my back pain is serious?
One study has shown that a lifetime prevalence of chronic low back pain is as high as 84%. There is a myriad of conditions that can point to pain in your back. Meningitis, kidney infection, kidney stones, tumours or ulcers can all create back pain and should be medically checked as soon as possible. There is a growing body of literature however, that shows how emotions play a part in back pain. The psychophysiological impact can be more debilitating than a physical trauma.
How do you know if back pain is muscular?
The easiest way to find out if your back pain is muscular is to lie still and notice if your pain eases or not. Pain radiating around your buttocks can also be a sign that you have muscular tension. This can lead to trouble walking or bending and even difficulty standing upright, these are all signs of muscular back pain.
How long should back pain last?

Back pain can usually last for 2 or 3 days and even up to a few weeks. If it is lasting longer than this then it’s time to seek professional help. It may be something minor like your posture, but it could be something major, so it is always wise to seek medical advice. You could try sitting back and relaxing to a hypnosis audio download and see if it can impact your thoughts, if it does then you know it’s a psychophysiological pain. There are many studies that show a connection between your emotional thoughts, anxiety and stress, etc and the physical impact they can have on the body.

Are back pain and constipation related?

Yes, back pain and constipation are related. If you have constipation then the pressure from your colon or rectum may be pushing on your spinal cord, resulting in back pain. Bowel obstructions, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, are just some of the other conditions associated with back pain and constipation. Dietary changes can have an impact to soften your stools. There is also the psychophysiological element to take into account, if your body is in high stress it may be causing tension on the internal organs restricting your bowel movements. Stress and negative emotions have also been shown to aggravate back pain, therefore alleviating the stressor may help. Studies show that people who have had adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s) are more prone to develop chronic pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, IBS and other debilitating conditions related to back pain and constipation. Adverse experiences are stored as negative emotional memory images (EMI’s) inside the minds eye, constantly triggering the body’s threat response. This leads to a hormonal imbalance which then can lead to back pain and constipation. Removing the EMI can allow the body to naturally rebalance, easing back pain and related constipation.

What can I do to relieve my back pain?
In the first instance we would advise you seek medical advice to rule out any underlying serious health conditions. Last year I had difficulty sitting comfortably for a number of months, it also impacted on walking and climbing the stairs. It turns out that the time I spent sitting and writing had taken its toll on my back, this was because my posture/sitting position was wrong. After a few visits to a physiotherapist, the muscle pain eased. I realised I had to change my seating position and now in the evenings I lie on the floor, face down, with 2 or 3 cushions under my chest. This arching of my back genuinely keeps the flexibility with very little effort.
What is the fastest home remedy for back pain?
A hot bath and gentle stretching exercises is probably the fastest home remedy. Next to this would be a hypnosis audio download to relax your mind. More studies are showing that pain has a psychophysiological connection, hence the mind impacts the body. Relaxing your mind can have a direct impact on physical symptoms as your body requires tension in order to give you pain.
