Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQs )

When should I be concerned about abdominal pain?
If you have any concerns about abdominals pains, then firstly get yourself medically checked. Stomach ache is basically your abdomen in cramp. This usually passes in a day or two and is often not a serious issue. However, if you have severe abdominal pain then consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible.
Where is abdominal pain located?

Abdominal pain can be located in any part of your abdominal region, this is from the lower chest to the distal groin. The diaphragm, pelvis, retroperitoneal and even the genitals are included in some healthcare professional’s diagnosis of abdominal pain. Please see article Pain

What causes pain in the stomach?
There are many causes of abdominal pain. A doctor will focus on the location, type and intensity of the pain in order to arrive at a diagnosis. If you are worried in any way, please seek medical help immediately. Lifestyle choices e.g., a poor-quality diet, high in sugar, drinking excessive alcohol and taking little to no exercise can all be contributing factors to abdominal pain. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, or as Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher put it “everything in moderation”.
Why abdominal pain occurs?
Abdominal pain can occur for many reasons, some physical and some mental. Your vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body, it originates from your brain and your gastrointestinal tract is in constant communication with your thoughts. If you’ve recently eaten food that is contaminated, the natural response from your stomach can be abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting and nausea, fever and diarrhoea. If you’ve over indulged and your body is suffering to break down the excess sugar and carbohydrates then you’ll experience pain, bloating, excess gas and diarrhoea.
What does pancreatic pain feel like?
The main symptoms of pancreatic pain can begin suddenly from the centre of your stomach, it grows steadily worse and travels to your lower back. Feeling sick, a fever, jaundice, indigestion and diarrhoea are all symptoms of acute pancreatitis. Eating and drinking can actually exacerbate the condition. Curling up into the foetal position can help to relieve the pain whereas lying flat on your back can make it worse.
Can abdominal pain be caused by stress?

Absolutely! If you’re feeling stressed, then your body is responding to a stimulus within your environment. This response engages the fight/flight/freeze mechanism of the brain, and a myriad of hormones are released into the bloodstream. The flight part of the system may be triggering your abdomen to excrete any excess from your body, so that you can run away. It doesn’t sound pretty but this evolutionary step comes built in with our system. Addressing the ‘stressor’ can be a fundamental step to clearing the abdominal pain. Can abdominal pain be psychological?

Abdominal pain can be both psychological and physical, as the cost of long-term stress and anxiety coupled with the internal chemistry that they produce, take their toll. Science is steadily moving in the direction of psychophysiological causes of poor health. Please see article Psychophysiological Pain
